Algorave is a performance format where sound and visuals are generated through live coding. Artists write code on stage, projecting their screens so the audience can witness the entire creative process firsthand. Originating in London in 2011, this movement now finds its rhythm in numerous cities worldwide.
Behind this global movement lies TOPLAP, the live coding community founded in 2004. As Algorave İzmir, we are proud to be an official part of this well-established network that connects over 48 local communities across the globe.
Six things we believe. Click to read.
We don’t hide behind the code; our process is in plain sight of the audience. Sometimes code streams across the screen, sometimes the interactive visual itself speaks — but nothing is concealed. What matters is that creation stays transparent.
There is no wall between code and paint, sound and motor, voice and circuit. The engineer stands on stage with the artist, the machine with the hand. Disciplines aren’t separate languages — they are words of the same sentence.
Mechatronics is not a tool but a partner. When a sound-reactive system touches the canvas, the work is neither wholly human nor wholly machine — it is their encounter. We carry that encounter to the stage.
Our work is live. The code written that night, the work born that night, belongs only to that night. We don’t repeat a finished show; every set is the singular record of its own moment.
Our code belongs to everyone. We don’t hoard what we write — we leave it to be built upon. We hold the door open for the next artist, as those before us held it for us.
We create in the Aegean but we are part of a global stage. Work born here speaks the same language as algorave communities everywhere. Local is the root, global is the branch.
Algorave İzmir is a community building algorithmic culture in İzmir by bringing together live coding, mechatronic systems, and interdisciplinary art.
To build an interdisciplinary culture of creation uniting art, code, and mechanics — and through it, to make İzmir a visible center on the international algorave stage.
We are committed to a safe, inclusive and respectful space for everyone — regardless of gender, identity, age, sexual orientation, disability, appearance, race, ethnicity, origin, belief, or technology preference. Keeping algorithmic culture safe is a shared responsibility.
The person is spoken to directly; why the behavior is unacceptable is explained, and change is expected.
The violation is stated and the person is removed from the event; their participation in future events is monitored.
The person is removed and permanently barred from all future events.
Anyone subjected to or witnessing such behavior should contact an organizer immediately. At events the organizing team will be identifiable. Reports are taken seriously and acted upon appropriately.
